The Ford Fiesta has officially become the best-selling car of all time in the UK this month.

Britain’s best-selling car since 2009

First launched in 1976, the Fiesta has led the small car market in the UK for nearly two decades and has been Britain’s best-selling car since 2009 when it stole the title from the Ford Focus.

With 4,115,000 models sold since its release, this month the Fiesta has overtaken the record of the previous title holder, the Ford Escort, which sold 4,105,961 in the 32 years it was on sale.

Mark Ovenden, the chairman and managing director for Ford Britain, said: “The Ford Fiesta has gone from strength to strength and today’s car combines style, value, driving dynamics and remarkable technologies such as the multi-award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine.

“It continues to outsell its nearest retail competitor by more than two to one and that really tells the story of this extraordinary car.”

The first generation Fiesta came equipped with a 45bhp four-cylinder engine and achieved around 37.7mpg with CO2 emissions of nearly 150g/km.

Since then, things have come a long way and it would take more than 80 modern Fiestas to generate the same amount of nitrogen oxide as the original Mark I model. Today’s model, with the award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost has a fuel economy of 65.7mpg and emits only 99g/km CO2.

40 per cent of Fiesta buyers in the UK now choose the turbocharged

According to Ford, over 40 per cent of Fiesta buyers in the UK now choose the turbocharged 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, and almost 90 per cent of them go for one of the higher-level trims like the Zetec, Titanium and ST models.

The most popular Fiesta model in Britain is currently the Zetec, which includes a wide range of features including a speed and audio volume limiting system for younger drivers, electrically operated and heated door mirrors, hill start assist and an electronic stability control.

Prices for the Fiesta range start from £9,695 for the entry-level Fiesta Studio, while the popular Zetec model has a starting price of £12,945.
